"Scared
Potter?"
The Dueling Club was started in the year 1992 during Harry Potter's second year at Hogwarts. It was designed as a class for students to learn how to protect themselves in the increasingly dangerous world, especially since The Chamber of Secrets was open and students were being attacked. Atleast that was the intention of the club. However in practice due to certain catastophies and a lack of credible teachers, the idea would not hold for too long. Although Professor Flitwick was thought to be a Dueling Champion "back in the days", it was not him who taught the throng of students. The teacher was none other than the Potions master, head of the Slytherin, and a former Death Eater, Severus Snape.
He was aided by a (completely unworthy) Professor Gilderoy Lockhart who made it known to the entire class that he could duel. However he could not prove that when Snape fell him with a few well place spells.
As the two teachers actually taught nothing, the students who were sent to practice disarming spells on each other ended up in midst of total chaos and even some cat fights with wands forgotten. Wishing to demonstrate the class using examples, Snape and Lockheart invite Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, the two unlikeliest partners therefore the perfect dueling opponents, to disarm each other. However both Mr. Potter and Mr. Malfoy had other agendas in mind. Both Malfoy and Potter ignored the commands to disarm and set about dueling.
Reaching the end of his patience Malfoy used the spell Serpentosia to conjure a snake to attack Harry. As the snake reared his head and went to attack Justin Finch-Fletchley Harry spoke to it unknowingly in Parseltounge, telling it to stop. However as no one else present there could speak Parseltounge, and it being a mark of a Dark Wizard, Harry was suspected to have egged the snake on to Justin.
And as no one ended up learning anything, and since no one wanted to return to see one lazy and one worthless teacher, the idea of a Dueling Club flopped spectacularly. |
