So you'd like to have a website and have all the designs and stuff
ready, but you don't have a home for your site? Not to worry, as we have
complied a list of hosting services and domain name registrars for you
to use.
Hosting:
Free-
Geocities: Good
host for starters but revolting for more advanced users. Has ads which
produce scrip errors. It has no advanced features or FTP.
Tripod: Lots
of ads. Ok for starters. There is not much support for many advanced
features such as PHP.
FortuneCity:
Has a decent amount of web space for starters but is ad supported
TopCities: Has
a decent amount of web space but it lacks advanced features. It does
have a small assortments of small time tools such as site promotion and
such.
HD Free
Hosting: Gives a lot of space and some amount of bandwidth, but
it does not give any advanced features (except FTP). It won't allow any
downloadable files either.
0Catch: Not
very good other than for testing purposes. Has ads and their
presentation looks very un-professional.
Potter Host:
Good host for Harry Potter sites. It's a free service provided by
Harry Potter fans, and lots of sites use it. It has all the
advanced features that you'd expect. The only ad you have to put is a
normal sized (88x31) button.
Paid-
The above sites: All the above sites (with the
exception of Potter Host and Magical Hosting) provide paid hosting, but
they're not recommended as they do not offer as much as truly paid
hosts.
Personal Sites: An excellent host that provides nearly everything
a site would require including, FTP, PHP, pre-installed scripts, unlimited MySQL databases, unlimited subdomains, and more. Their plans are
excellently priced, and their costumer service is top-notch. We highly reccomend them, and that's why The Dueling Club is hosted at Personal Sites
UZIPP: A lot
Harry Potter fan sites are hosted here. They have a lot or most
(depending on plan) of the advanced features that you come to expect.
The more advanced plans are a bit on the pricey side.
Insider Hosting:
They are a bit pricey and not very known as they seem new.
Hostradius:
Their plans are quite cheap for shared hosting and reseller hosting.
Their plans seem decent and will suit most people.
Flux Services:
Not very known and does not have as much hosting plans and options
as other hosts. Somewhat pricey.
iPowerWeb: Quite
well known and they offer some decent plans for newcomers but they are
not very economical.
Startlogic: Quite
pricey but does offer some good plans. Not well known though. Their
dedicated server's CPU are not fast for how much they're charging.
Jumpline: They
have a very good infrastructure and provide lots of options. They are
not the kind of host for newcomers or people who are technology
impaired.
PowWeb: They
have a few options in their plans but they're quite pricey and don't
have variation.
EV1Servers
(formerly Rackshack): A really good dedicated server host. You can
have your own server and you can install pretty much whatever you want.
They have decent prices. They're very popular as their supply is limited
Buy your own servers:
IBM
Servers: Probably the best servers around. It's also very pricey
and is not for individuals unless they have a lot of cash. It's designed
for large scale business and/or small business.
Dell Servers: They
are also very good but not as good as IBM, but they are cheaper. It's is
not for individuals unless they have a lot of cash. It's designed for
large scale business and/or small business.
RedHat Linux
(Operating Sys): Linux is based off of Unix so it has all of it's
advantages. RedHat is the best distro of Linux.
Apache (server
software): This is the software you use to host your sites. It's the
best one out there because it's VERY hard to crash and it's free.
Cpanel (Webhost
Manager): It's the best Webhost Manager (WHM) out there, but it is
very pricey.
Enism (Webhost
Manager): It's a good WHM but it's miles away from Cpanel in terms
of features and price (it's cheaper).
PSSC
Labs (Pre-configured servers): They offer pre-configured servers
as well as custom made ones. They seem to have a lot of clients.
Domain Names:
Many Hosts: Many hosts provide domain name
register services or give you free ones. But these are not recommended
because if you decide to change servers some hosts might not let you
have the domain. If you get one through a specialized domain name
registrar you can port it around while you change servers.
GoDaddy:
(We use it). Very good services, and prices. It also has an option
of hiding your name, location and such from Whois lookups.
Register: It's
known and seems to be decent but they are quite pricey.
DomainDirect:
They look good and have some decent plans but they are pricey. You
could find other plans out there for half the price that they ask.
Aplus.net:
Their prices are not too much but they don't have a variety of plans
to choose from.
