Many of the names JK Rowling gives her characters have meanings in them either from history or from another language. These meanings identify the character's personality and sometimes offer hints as to what is in store for these characters in the future, and other times it just amusing to know.

Malfoy: French. Bad Faith (mal + foi)
Voldemort: French. Flight of Death (Vol + de + mort)
Fleur Delacour: French. Flower of the Court (fleur + de la + cour)
Beauxbatons: French. Beautiful wands (Beaux + batons). Technically speaking batons means sticks but it is uses as an assumed meaning.
Durmstrang: German. Storm and Stress (Sturm und drang)
Petunia: A flower
Lily: A flower
Hermes: The Messenger from Greek mythology
Hedwig: A saint
Lupin: Wolf. Scientific name for wolf is Canis Lupus. Also Lupin (partially) rhymes with Lunar which means moon.
Remus: Remus and Romulus were brothers who were raised by wolves. Romulus killed Remus and became the founder of Rome.
Snape: A town in England<
Sirius: The Dog Star (the brightest star in the sky)
Regulus: The name of a star in the Alpha Leo constellation.
Bellatrix: A star in the constellation Orion, the Great Hunter. Also known as the "Female Warrior."
Narcissa: Narcissism is defined as excessive love of oneself. (self concieted person)
Dumbledore: Old English. Means Bumblebee.
Albus: Latin. White
Bagman: A person who collects money (Ludo Bagman was a gambler who never repayed debts)
Arthur: It could refer to King Arthur who was a leader in ancient times who fought his enemies and defeated them. (King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table)
Moody: Bad mood.
Nicholas Flamel: A real alchemist. He spend his life trying to create the Philosopher's Stone but was not successful. But some sources say that he was. Also according to the book Da Vinci Code he was once a Grand Master of the Priori of Scion (most likely fictious)
Nimbus: A Greek God. Also is a type of cloud.
Parvati: A Hindu goddess who is married to God Shiva (a.k.a The Destroyer). Had a son, Ganesha, who has the body of a human and head of a elephant. Ganesha is known as the Remover of Obstacles. Sister of Padma.
Padma: Sister of Parvati. Goddess of the Ganges. The Ganges river is a river located in the north east of India and connects to the Bay of Bengal. It's considered to be a holy river.
Cho-: Japanese. Butterfly
Filch: To steal (he steals banned items from students)
Nagini: Sanskrit. Snake (Naga)
Peeves: A Peeve. Something that annoys a person greatly.
Mundungus: A type of smelly tobacco. Mundungus is commonly said to have a smell of tobacco around him.
Alastor: Greek God who always wanted revenge.
Gilderoy Lockhart: Gilderoy is Scottish for "handsome Scottish highway man". JKR found Lockhart from a WWII memorial. Gilderoy could also refer to Gilded which means to offer something deceptive and unattractive false beauty (i.e a fake stone is gilded with gold, usually only a very thin layer).
